Carnival Cruise Line Kicks off Celebration Key™ Portal Reveals With Preview of Paradise Plaza and Calypso Lagoon
It initially sailed transatlantic voyages that ferried immigrants between The Netherlands and New York City. As one of the newest Carnival ship installments, Carnival Jubilee includes popular dining joints with Bonsai Teppanyaki and Guy’s Burger Joint. The line continued to expand its Fantasy class, building Carnival Ecstasy (1991), Carnival Sensation (1993), Carnival Fascination (1994), Carnival Imagination (1995) and Carnival Inspiration (1996). The company’s current president is Christine Duffy, who stepped into the role starting February 2015. The fun continues when you reach your port — there’s a huge variety of shore excursions to choose from.
DEPARTURE PORTS
The numbers are impressive today, but they probably won't remain this impressive for very long. It is just too hard a growth rate to sustain given the economic sensitivity of the industry, the inherent constraints of ships and, well, the way basic math works. Carnival has been benefiting from a resurgence in demand for cruises following the effective industry shutdown during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic. But that demand isn't just coming from existing cruisers -- there's a whole new contingent of people who are experiencing cruising for the very first time.

Notable former ships
Duffy continues to usher Carnival through rapid growth, with the acquisition of five new ships in a period of two years. The cruise line’s fleet expansion continues with two more of its largest and most innovative Excel-class ships in 2027 and 2028. She’s also currently focused on the development of the cruise line’s new exclusive destination, Celebration Key, which opens in July 2025. Under Duffy’s leadership, Carnival became the first major U.S. cruise line to have its entire fleet back in operations after the industry-wide pause related to the COVID pandemic. Duffy’s tenure also includes several major milestones in the company’s history, including the year-long celebration of its 50th birthday in 2022 and the moment it welcomed its 100 millionth guest on board in 2023. There are only so many potential customers, and only so many rooms on Carnival's cruise ships to accommodate them.

The two class' namesake ships ,300-ton Carnival Splendor and 130,000-ton Carnival Dream -- entered the fleet in 2008 and 2009, respectively. While there wasn't another Splendor-class ship built, Carnival Magic and Carnival Breeze launched to complete the small, three-ship Dream class in 2011 and 2012. Carnival Fantasy has the longest tenure with the line; it launched in 1990, marking the beginning of the Fantasy class. It also became the first new cruise ship ever to offer three- and four-night Bahamas cruises from Miami. TSS Mardi Gras, the line's first Carnival cruise ship, was purchased from Canadian Pacific Steamships Ltd., and sailed for the line from 1972 to 1993. Carnival Panorama, another sister to Carnival Vista, entered service as the cruise line's flagship on December 11, 2019.
Future expansion will build beyond the five portals, including the construction of a water park. Calypso Lagoon, just to the west, is home to the sport court, the freshwater lagoon and lounging options galore. It’s home to a bar with 50 swings that let visitors dip their feet into the water, and just one of many bars serving the space and two full-service restaurants and other casual snack shacks. The adults-only area of the portal will feature a swim-up bar with a DJ, food trucks and more lounging options. Like several of Carnival Corp.'s other brands, the line came under the umbrella in 2003 during the P&O Princess Cruises merger. Acquired by Carnival Corp. in 1989, Holland America also carries a rich history dating back to 1873.

Carnival Corp. took full ownership of Italian line Costa Cruises in 2000 after originally obtaining just 50% in 1997. The brand largely serves the Italian cruise demographic in the Mediterranean. In 2022, following the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown, Carnival Corp. transferred some of Costa's ships to Carnival Cruise Line, touting "Fun Italian Style" and offering North Americans a taste of what Costa has to offer. After four years of anticipation, Carnival changed the game when it debuted its newest and largest class, the Vista Class. Carnival Vista introduced the biggest changes the line had ever seen with a number of firsts -- not only for the line but also for the industry.
After the second and third Spirit-class ships launched, it debuted its next class -- Conquest class -- which marked the return of big ships for the line. After dipping its toes into 100,000-plus-ton ships, they returned to building slightly smaller Carnival ships -- with a new Spirit Class spearheaded by the 88,500-ton Carnival Spirit. Carnival Spirit became the first new cruise ship ever positioned in Alaska and cruise ports of Hawaii. The Carnival parent company took over a majority stake in Cunard in 1998, but the brand's history began in 1840, when a Canadian war veteran established a fleet of steam-powered ferries and, later, ocean liners. All Carnival cruises go to great spots — what sets each ship apart is how it gets you there. In 2001, Carnival transferred their first new build, the 1982 built Tropicale to Costa Cruises.

Among these first new builds were Holiday (1985), Jubilee (1986) and Celebration (1987). All three of these first Carnival cruise ships left the Carnival fleet between 2001 and 2009. From that point on, the line would continue to custom-build Carnival’s cruise ships, which gradually increased in size. Carnival Cruise Line pioneered the concept of shorter, budget-friendly cruises with their cruise ships. Its fleet consists of "Fun Ships" that feature a wide array of entertainment and dining venues, most of which are included in the already-affordable cruise fares. Carnival Cruise Line was founded in 1972 by business mogul Ted Arison and was originally a private company.
According to the company, 2023 unit-adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) exceeded 2019 levels. Paradise Plaza features a rainbow-colored walkway through a sunshine entranceway with a 10-story “Suncastle” as a centerpiece. The welcome area is the place to book the day’s activities, including cabanas, water sports and shore excursions. She received a check for $5,000 from Carnival and a future day pass for the resort, which won’t normally be open to visitors from the island. The line says at least 300 jobs will be generated for locals serving the cruise guests. Debuting in summer 2025, the port of call will welcome ships from Florida ports Port Canaveral, PortMiami, Tampa and Jacksonville, as well as six other U.S. ports.
In 2001, the new Panamax size Spirit class debuted with the Carnival Spirit, the first of the four-ship class within the Carnival fleet. Another Western Caribbean cruise will depart from New Orleans, then make stops to Montego Bay, Grand Cayman and Cozumel in the span of seven days. From May 26 to June 2, the ship will stop in Key West, Freeport and Nassau before returning to the Crescent City. These are the destinations that the Carnival will be traveling to from New Orleans in 2024.
The newest Carnival cruise ships, Carnival Venezia and Carnival Jubilee will be added to the fleet in 2023. Sticking to festive Carnival ship names, Carnival Venezia draws inspiration from Italy. Cruisers can enjoy the Venice-inspired atrium Piazza San Marco and Italian restaurants, including Marco Polo, Canal Grande Restaurants and Tomodoro.
Through the rest of the decade, the line would continue to sell, or transfer the other 1980s built ships to other lines, with the Jubilee in 2004, Celebration in 2008, and Holiday in 2009. Carnival Liberty has two Western Caribbean cruises sailing from New Orleans in June. The ship will sail out of New Orleans several times this summer for seven-day itineraries to the Eastern or Western Caribbean, according to a recent news release from Carnival. The 369-acre site less than 20 miles east of Freeport will be the first dedicated to Carnival Cruise Line, although Carnival ships have used sister line destinations Princess Cays and Half Moon Cay for years.
Cruise ships are also including more and more amenities, like amusement-style rides, water parks, and sports facilities, to better compete for traveler's dollars. In 1992, Carnival Corp. acquired a 25% stake in Seabourn before purchasing the entire brand outright in 2001. The luxury cruise line, which includes things like alcohol, Wi-Fi and gratuities in its fares, sails a fleet of lovely ships with a focus on high-end furnishings and next-level service. Founded in 1972 by Ted Arison, Carnival Cruise Line started out with just one secondhand ship, Mardi Gras.
